Lexicon Introduces Surround EX" Upgrade For Digital Controllers
Bedford, MA...(October 1999): Lexicon-Industry leader with over 25 years experience in high-end digital audio processing, is offering the latest advance in film sound reproduction, Surround EX", to existing and future owners of their MC-1, DC-2, and DC-1 Digital Controllers. Surround EX" was introduced to audiences this summer in two of the industrys biggest blockbusters: Star Wars Episode 1 - The Phantom Menace, and Austin Powers - The Spy Who Shagged Me.
Co-developed by Dolby® and THX®, Surround EX" enhances the film sound experience by creating an additional surround back channel in addition to the existing left surround and right surround channels. Prior to Surround EX", commercial theaters divided the surround speaker array into two separate surround channels. The left surround channel included the speakers along the left wall and the left half of the rear wall. And the right surround channel included the speakers along the right wall and the right half of the rear wall. With Surround EX", the speakers along the left wall, right wall, and rear wall become three separate channels instead of the usual two. This provides more flexibility for the sound designer and allows sounds to move over, behind, and around the audience.
In the home, Surround EX" will utilize four surround speakers to reproduce the three surround channels encoded on a Surround EX" soundtrack.
Two speakers located behind the listeners will reproduce the rear channel, and one speaker on each to the sides of the listeners will reproduce each of the side channels.
This is the same speaker configuration that Lexicon recommends for optimal playback of music and film soundtracks with their Digital Controllers. Since the MC-1, DC-2 (Dolby Digital & DTS versions), and DC-1 (Dolby Digital & DTS versions) all have 8 channel architecture and include 5.1 channel decoding, adding Surround EX" decoding does not require any Lexicon hardware modifications.
The Surround EX" upgrade will be offered for MC-1, DC-1, and DC-2 owners with a MSRP of $300. There will also be a special introductory offer with a MSRP of $100 for a limited time. Owners interested in upgrading their unit are encouraged to contact their authorized Lexicon dealer for details including the introductory offer.
