NHT - Now Hear This

Along with a fresh change in leadership, and a return of several veterans, NHT announced their Evolution speaker series at CES. It will replace their older Music and Home Theater lines. The Music line consisted of speakers such as the highly acclaimed Model 3.3 with its NHT-characteristic 21-degree angled baffle, while the Home Theater line included speakers such as their versatile VT-3. Seeking to address new customer needs for multi-channel audio, flexible placement, and scaleable speaker systems, the NHT Evolution series comprises nine individual components. All the models should become available on April 1, 2002.

At the heart of the system are two 3-way monitors: the M5 ($450/pair) and M6 ($600). Eschewing the traditional idea of what NHT call "good, better, best" where there is an implied hierarchy of increasing quality as the models in a speaker line increase in price, the M5 and M6 have basically identical response and distortion characteristics, with the two speakers differing mainly in output level. The M5 is best used in smaller rooms, while the M6 is capable of higher output for larger rooms. Because of its sophisticated crossover design (discussed later), the M5 and M6 may be used as the front, center, or surround speakers. Both speakers also have a boundary compensation switch to reduce mid-bass response when the speaker is near a wall or placed on a shelf or television, and they are also magnetically shielded.

The Evolution monitors are also part of the Evolution tower speaker systems. The T5 system ($2,500/pair) consists of the M5 monitor mated with the B5 woofer module, with an A1 monoaural amplifier and an X1 bass manager and active crossover for mono active bass. The T6 system ($4,000/pair) consists of the M6 monitor mated to the B6 woofer module, with two A1 mono amplifiers, an X1 bass manager and active crossover. Click for a Larger Image

Unlike the T5, the T6 system is capable of stereo bass, but both systems have bass response down to 26Hz and differ only in output levels. The single-12-inch woofer T5 system has a peak acoustic output of 107dB at 1 meter, while the dual-12-inch woofer T6 system has a peak acoustic output of 111dB at 1 meter. M6 and M5 speakers are fully upgradeable to T6 and T5 systems, respectively, for the difference in price. []
