Two Channel

PS Audio

One of the new products introduced by PS Audio at CES 2002 was their new hybrid power amplifier, the HCA-1. This amp is a two-channel model based on an hybrid analogue/digital design and is rated at 150 watts per channel into an 8 ohm load and 300 watts per channel into 4 ohms. The input stage (which is also used in the Reference Tower and Classic 250 amps) is a new PS Audio design - a fully balanced/differential class A JFET stage with zero feedback, low distortion and is balanced from input to output.

Common mode characteristics are claimed to top 70 dB in balanced mode. The output stage is a 93-percent efficient SDAT circuit developed by PS Audio. The SDAT output stage uses a modular Pulse Width Modulated design that is "super linearized" as a gain block.

Super linearization (a patented technique) is achieved by incorporating the output filtering stage of the SDAT in the audio feedback loop. PS Audio had a small demo of the amp set up using a Krell CD player and two-channel preamp (and a PS Audio P600 power plant on the bottom in this photograph) and from my brief listen it sounded very clean. The HCA-1 will be available in February with an MSRP of $1,495.

PS Audio's new Classic 250 power amplifier. As noted above, it has the same input stage as the HCA-1. It is a dual mono design - the output stage is a true-analogue closed loop device with unity gain, and zero interaction with the input stage. Each mono side has its own 700vA power supply. As you can see it sports single-ended and balanced inputs and two sets of speaker outputs per channel. I assume the jacks in the centre of the rear panel are for system control via the PS buss. Power is rated at 2× 250w into 8 ohms and 2× 500w into 4 ohms. The Classic 250 will be available in March with an MSRP of $3,995. []
