Ayre Acoustics
Ayre Acoustics, a leader in the high-end audio/video market showed off its new and improved products for the 2002/2003 year. These included CX-7 CD player which allows “up and oversampling” to 1.4112MHz at 24-bits, the improved K-5x preamplifier offering “superior sonics” than its elder sibling, and the V-5x Power Amplifier that is also said to afford enhanced musical reproduction over its predecessor. These products will retail for $2,950, $2,950 and $4,500 respectively.

In addition to the changes in the two channel specific models, Ayre also announced that its well-received D-1x DVD player would soon be furnished with an optional SDI board. The goal of the new option is to set a higher standard for video reproduction than has been possible up till now, but pricing was not yet available. Finally the company also announced it plans to sell its own Signature Series interconnect cable, although once again pricing and availability details were not ready in time for the show. []

Enlightened Audio Designs
Close on the heels of its $10,000 Theatermaster Studio preamp/processor introduced at CEDIA 2002, Enlightened Audio Designs unveiled a scaled down version called – well, the Theatermaster Studio (its big brother has been mercifully re-christened the Theatermaster Studio Pro to minimize confusion). To meet a lower target price of $7,500, the new kid on the EAD block sacrifices the front panel monitor, DVI switching, and some I/O flexibility, but sports the same Texas Instruments Aureus DA610 1800MIPS DSP chip, with the same basic decoding capabilities, surround modes, and bass management. The Pro model still retains a sonic edge with higher quality DACs for its main outputs, and sports an unusually flexible 8-output multi-zone array which can be configured as 1 8-channel zone, 4 2-channel zones, or 8 1-channel zones – or, it could be reconfigured in the future to provide up to sixteen main zone channels, says Chief Engineer Alastair Roxburgh, “…if the world goes more mad than it is at the moment.”

Both Theatermaster Studio models come with a Marantz 5200 universal touchscreen remote, pre-programmed by EAD. []
