Loudspeakers and Subwoofers

Let’s start right at the top with the flagship of the Focal-JMlab range - the Grand Utopia. We heard this massive speaker in operation at the DTS demo at CES 2001 and it was very impressive indeed. Well, it has now been upgraded, if that’s possible, with a new beryllium foil tweeter, proprietary to Focal-JMlab, to become the Grand Utopia Be. Most other applications that use beryllium, which is 3 times more rigid than titanium and 5 times more than aluminium, use it in alloy as working with it is very difficult. The tweeters in the Grand Utopia are 100% 0.25ìm beryllium foil. JMlab designed the machinery to make the foil and they have patent applications pending. These speakers are truly huge – 174 × 50 × 78cm and weighing in at 210kg (5’8” × 1’7” × 2’6”, 463lbs). Rounding out the driver complement are 1 x 15”, 1 × 11” W® cone woofers and 2 × 6.5" W® cone midrange drivers. Other specs: Low frequency point (-6dB) 16Hz; Frequency response (+/-3dB) 20Hz - 40kHz on reference axis; Efficiency 92dB; Nominal impedance 8ohms; Crossover frequencies 50Hz / 250Hz / 2500Hz at 24dB/octave. Available now for the meagre MSRP of $80,000 per pair..

Realising that the Grand Utopia was beyond the means of most of us, Focal-JMlab has introduced some new models to round out the Utopia range. This one is the Nova Utopia, next one down from the Grand. It employs the same beryllium tweeter and 6.5” midrange drivers with the bass being handled by a 13” W® cone woofer. Other specs: Low frequency point (-6dB) 20Hz; Frequency response (+/-3dB) 25Hz - 40kHz on reference axis; Efficiency 91.5dB; Nominal impedance 8ohms; Crossover frequencies 250Hz / 2500Hz at 24dB/octave. Dimensions: 134 × 44 × 62 cm (4’4” × 1’6” × 2’). The Nova will be available in March, MSRP unavailable at this time.

Next down the line is the Alto Utopia. It also uses the beryllium tweeter, this time in combination with a single 6.5” midrange driver and an 11” woofer. Other specs: Low frequency point (-6dB) 25Hz; Frequency response (+/-3dB) 30Hz - 40kHz on reference axis; Efficiency 91dB; Nominal impedance 8ohms; Crossover frequencies 250Hz / 2500Hz at 24dB/octave. Dimensions: 121 × 37 × 53 cm (4’ × 1’4” × 1’10”). The Alto will be available in March, MSRP unavailable at this time.

Just to prove that these speakers really are meant for home theater systems, this is the Center Utopia. The same old beryllium tweeter and 2 6.5” midrange drivers with a 10” woofer. Other specs: Low frequency point (-6dB) 35Hz; Frequency response (+/-3dB) 45Hz - 40kHz on reference axis; Efficiency 91.5dB; Nominal impedance 8 ohms; Crossover frequencies 250Hz /2500Hz at 24dB/octave. Dimensions: 30 × 70 × 44.5 cm (1’ × 2’4” × 1’5”). The Center will be available in May, MSRP unavailable at this time.

At the bottom end (it’s all relative) of the Utopian range is the stand-mount/bookshelf Micro Utopia. This is a two way model with the beryllium tweeter in combination with a single 6.5” midrange driver. Other specs: Low frequency point (-6dB) 40Hz; Frequency response (+/-3dB) 50Hz-40kHz on reference axis; Efficiency 89dB; Nominal impedance 8ohms; Crossover frequencies 2500Hz at 24dB/octave. Dimensions: 42.5 × 25 × 38 cm (1’5” × 10” × 1’3”). The Micro will be available in April, MSRP unavailable at this time.

To fill out the bottom end there will also be a new Utopia Sub expected to be available in July. []
