DVD Entertainment Group Pt.1

On Thursday evening (9th January), the DVD Entertainment Group hosted an event at the Bellagio Hotel to promote the DVD format and present a special award to an individual who has made a huge contribution to the creation and advancement of the format. Amy Jo Donner, Executive Director, DVD Entertainment Group (right) led proceedings.

Barry Sonnenfeld, movie director (‘Men in Black’, ‘MIB:II’, ‘Get Shorty’, ‘The Addams Family’); cinematographer (Joel and Ethan Coen’s ‘Blood Simple’, ‘Raising Arizona’, and ‘Miller’s Crossing’, and Rob Reiner’s ‘When Harry Met Sally’) and occasional actor. Barry sang the praises of DVD, saying (probably not tongue-in cheek) that when he makes movies the theatrical release is a “loss leader” for the eventual DVD release. He also sang the praises of his own DVD commentary tracks and had tales to tell about the amazing suction power of the toilets on the Warner corporate jets and the trials and tribulations of Rene Russo and her falsies on the set of ‘Get Shorty’!

Ben Feingold, President, Columbia TriStar Home Entertainment; President, Columbia TriStar Motion Picture Group, Home Entertainment and Acquisitions. Ben also paid tribute to the DVD format, but his main job for the evening was to introduce Quincy Jones and Saul Zaentz, and with them, to present the DVD Visionary Award to Warren Lieberfarb.
