A/V Source Components

The Prestige A/V Player from Audio Aero represents the first of the DVD/SACD players that I have seen that will decode multi-channel SACD, DVD-Video (24-bit 96kHz) and also CD, CD-R, CD-RW and CD-V all using a tube output stage. Unusually, Audo Aero have chosen to deliberately convert DSD (SACD) sources to PCM for the purposes of their own proprietary processing, which it is claimed, removes some of the ‘noise’ present in DSD signals and improves performance. There are inputs for BNC, RCA, AT&T, TOSLINK and AES/EBU so that the internal converters can be used with other digital sources, as well as balanced and unbalanced outputs. The unit sports a separate power supply, seen in the below the transport/DAC unit.

With a price tag of around $10,000 when it goes into production in March, it certainly won’t be at the lower level of the market, but given the success of Audio Aero’s CD player, should be worth a listen. []

The DVD-Audio equipped McIntosh MVP851 features advanced 12-bit video processing with progressive scan outputs and an ultra-stable twin laser optical pickup for superior playback of both DVDs and CDs. Dolby Digital or DTS soundtrack data is available via an optical or coaxial digital output or via the internal decoder and analogue outputs. The MVP851’s high-performance audio section features a 24-bit Burr-Brown DAC that 192kHz sources. Supported formats include DVD-RAM, DVD-Audio, DVD-Video, CD/Video and CD-R/RW discs. When asked whether McIntosh were working on a digital interface for DVD-Audio, their representative said: “not at the moment.”

From the recently resurrected McCormack Audio, famed for high quality preamps and power amps, comes their first universal player, the UDP-1. If my memory serves me correctly, this is in fact their first audio or video source component. With both DVD-Audio and SACD support, the player features 24-bit 192kHz Burr Brown DACs and built-in Dolby and DTS processing. The McCormack designed analogue stages feature their own dedicated, regulated power supplies. On the video side the UDP-1 boasts a 10bit/54MHz video DAC, the usual composite, S-Video and component outputs, switchable between interlaced and progressive scan modes. The UDP-1, which uses a mechanism from Pioneer (the same as that in the Elite D45A) should begin shipping in April at a retail price of $2,995. []
